Keeping a daily gratitude journal is a simple and powerful practice. It helps you to notice, appreciate and savour the good things in life.
It feels good to spend quality time with friends and family, to get a great opportunity at work or to receive a genuine compliment. Unfortunately, these good-vibes are often short lived. Daily gratitude journaling brings the little and big wins of each day to the front of your mind. As a result, you feel happier.
In this article I explain why you should start a gratitude journal and share with a downloadable 7 day gratitude with prompts that you can use to get started today.
Why you should start a gratitude journal today
Here are three reasons why keeping a gratitude journal is a no-brainer:
- It is scientifically proven to increase your happiness.
- It takes as little as five minutes a day.
- Gratitude compounds. The more you practice, the more you will realize that you have to be grateful for.
After more than a year of daily journaling I wholeheartedly recommend keeping a gratitude journal as a way to start this life-changing habit.
How I discovered gratitude journaling
As a university student I worked a part-time job in a local patisserie. During a shift on a sunny Saturday afternoon, a woman arrived and asked to speak to the store owner. The woman explained that she loved the products made by the patisserie and wanted to thank the owner personally as part of her daily gratitude practice. The owner was absolutely delighted and I’m certain that this interaction made her days. As a bystander this simple act of gratitude also made my day and is a memory that I will likely never forget.
Start Small
Travelling across the city to thank someone that you appreciate in person, although wonderful, is not a sustainable way to start a new gratitude practice. Instead, I recommend that you start small and consistent. For example you can start by writing a sentence each day about something that you’re grateful for.
Gratitude Journal Prompts
To make things even easier I’ve created a 7 day gratitude journal with prompts to get you started. To access the journal as an editable PDF enter your email below:
